Text like "3 elements selected" would be more like iOS (which displays "0
Items", "2 Items", etc.), but there are a few issues with this:

1.  As far as I can tell, Chromium's localization system does not support
something like ngettext, which allows multiple plural forms in a language to be
handled (see, e.g.,
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Localization_and_Plurals).
I do not know if there will be plural form issues with translating text like "3
selected" in some locales, but I am hopeful that there won't :)

2.  "elements" or "items" will be okay for certain <select multiple> elements,
but might be confusing for others.  iOS' display of "Items" is one of the things
that I do not like because it can't be customized for a particular <select
multiple>.

3.  For mobile sites, it would be best to keep this text as short as possible so
that the <select multiple> does not need to have a large width in order not to
truncate the text.
