nit: This looks like it could've been moved in a separate CL?

It could, but this code needed to change as part of this CL already and jeremy
asked me to move it to the appropriate section (see [1]) instead of relying on
the views impl returning false which makes sense to me. Happy to do it in a
separate CL if you feel strongly.
