Given that this would have to be modified every time a new platform comes to
life, it seems better to pay the price and copy this to all unsupported
platforms.

put into _posix.cc for now, which originally was because I had hoped that i'd
only have to do this once for all posix systems but I'm pretty certain that's
wrong :(
