What's this doing?  Can this go away after class-view starts passing in a ref=?

ServiceRefElement provides a default implementation of name which will return
either the 'name' or 'user_name' keys. InstanceRef wants to use the object
preview here. Perhaps "name" is the wrong property name on ServiceRefElement.
