nit: I've seen some folks preferring to "raise Exception(msg)" so that the
printout has a callstack for mandatory overrides..

Done, except I used NotImplementedError instead. It's a bit of a toss up, the
raise is definitely clearer, but the print and exit is much less likely to be
accidentally consumed by an over zealous error handler.
