Why is this needed? Can't you set them to the right thing in the first place?

No I can't. We need to export ..$ORIGIN.. to LDFLAGS in "download_build_install"
script, but this string contains a dollar sign "$". "configure" uses this
variable and writes to Makefile. make runs commands from Makefile. And each of
tries to use substitution rules. Different libraries use different structure of
build files and LDFLAGS pass through substitution rules differently. Moreover,
Makefile uses $$ to escape $, and bash-scripts use the other.
