nit: You use "credentials" here and "credential" below, as the variable name.

Yeah, "credentials" is one of those words that's colloquially pluralized even
when talking about a single credential. At least, I personally find "a
credential" more awkward than "credentials". :)

Changing to "credential" regardless.
