Nit: Returns (2 places)

"For testing" sounds like this must only be used in tests.  Is that what you
intended to imply?  You might want "Useful in tests" at the end of the comment
instead, if not, just to sound a bit milder.

Whatever you do, be consistent here and on the accessor you add below.
