normally we use PATH_MODE_CLEAR but I don't think that will work in this case
given the way we're compositing images. Hmm...

Yes, I've tried using PATH_MODE_CLEAR first but that didn't work. Maybe having
both background and foreground colors settable externally could be something to
consider for vectorized icons?
