Landing this. 
I didn't manage to find sievers@ online. I had a brief chat with dtrainor (who
reviewed the CL) and he explained me that is possible that this has some memory
side effects and reverting this should cause just some ui glitch (which IIRC is
the previous state before the CL).
Given the regressions associated to this and the timeline (we need urgently to
fill out the health plan, the bisect assigned the bug to sievers 2 days ago.)
I'm going to revert and merge request this.
I'm totally fine if this gets unreverted soon after. just plz give just 1 day of
space for the perf bots to catch up and give us data.
