Where are these normally defined?  Why can't we just use
the declaration from the BSD headers?

In BSD (and in Linux, as far as I know), they aren't actually functions, they're
macros that are declared in separate header files for each possible
architecture. Since I took the road of writing actual functions (in an
architecture-independent way), I need to make some declarations.
