Also, we should do the compiler initialization here;
that makes the actual compilation v. simple.

(It's just copying a list.)
Can we just remove this function and use the results of idl_paths()
and idl_paths_recursive() directly?

and going to remove the multiple calls,
so you'll just need to have:
