how can you nuke all this without breaking something?  are all of these using
.favicon more generically now?

The rtl background-position-x CSS switches the position of the icon for right to
left languages.

The wrapper div gives us the "changing the position of the icon" behavior for
free.
The icon is stretched to cover the entire ".favicon wrapper div" so it is not
necessary to specify a background-position-x within the div.
