I don't like the idea of using friendship here.

We should either:

A) Change this class to support the behavior we need via constructor parameters
or extra methods.

or

B) Change private to protected so your subclass can call the methods needed.

or 

C) Use a "delegate" pattern where this class can take an object that implements
some interface, and then calls methods on that object to customize behavior.

Added an extra method, and removed the new class
