Hi Jochen, and Happy New Year!

This CL reverts some code I committed a while ago (with your approval) to verify
whether it really correlate to a seeming unrelated regression in a DOM perf test
(only one!), but the perf sheriffs are still hunting me for this so I will
revert it for a day or two to let the perf bots run over it and see if this
really correlates or not and then decide how to proceed. Can you give me an
owner blessing.
