I just found this page about IDL for new extension APIs:

but I've no idea if that applies to this API.

Interesting.  I haven't seen that.  For now, since this works, I'm going to go
with the "old" way.  I may convert to a .idl file in the future if it makes
sense.  Since this is not a public API, I'm not sure it matters.
