Do we need this flag in the long run? It feels like we're passing a flag to make
a decision at run-time for something that will (eventually?) be compiled just
one way or the other, hence won't work if the flag is not properly set (or
unset).
If we need it for the transition, that's ok, but I hope we're going to eliminate
it soon.

We don't need it in the long run, it's only for the transition.
