This feels like it strays from being a trivial clean-up to perhaps diverging
interfaces - after all, a console abstraction that doesn't allow reading on some
platforms certainly "feels" weird.

I feel like this change should go through someone who knows the code and the
intent of it, as trivial as it may seem.

Better now? It's still an interface change, but it's nicer. I'm fine with
waiting for cpu too if you prefer that.
