What is the reason for this change? As far as I know, the scoping for
the objects should be correct.

Yeah, the .c_str looks fine to me (albeit a bit scary).  PageData is private so
it's probably ok for it to have the extra API constraint of "the pointer must be
alive for as long as the function call".
