I've been poking at this on and off, when I have time, and I'm pretty baffled. 
Do you have any idea why such a simple change could consistently cause mac and
windows unit tests to fail, but not linux?

Anyway, I'm slowly working through my backlog of more tangible bugs, so I'll
probably get to this later next week, but if you have a simple explanation that
could move this forward, that would be great.  If not, don't worry about it.
